Step aboard the bright red caboose, browse the gift shop featuring local artisans, and learn how the railroad, the lake, and the people who lived here helped shape the community you see today. Skip the chains this time and choose local. Great food is part of getting to know a place, and you may get a recommendation for your next stop while you're there.

2:00 PM | Meet Some Wild Locals

After lunch, head to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. This regional branch of the state's Museum of Natural Sciences is a great afternoon stop for visitors of all ages. Explore exhibits highlighting the natural world, learn more about southeastern North Carolina, and check the schedule for programs or special activities happening during your visit.

It's a natural follow-up to your morning at Lake Waccamaw. You've seen some of Columbus County's wild side outdoors; now you can get a closer look indoors. This is one stop the kids will probably be happy you added to the itinerary.

3:00 PM | Discover Downtown Whiteville

Don't rush out after the museum. Spend some time in Downtown Whiteville, where locally owned businesses, public art, and community spaces offer another side of Columbus County. Before dinner, head to the Historic Columbus County Courthouse and Columbus County Memorial Garden in the heart of Whiteville. Built in 1914–1915, the courthouse has stood at the center of the community for more than a century. Its stately columns and Classical Revival architecture make it one of Whiteville's most recognizable landmarks. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the courthouse recently underwent an extensive restoration that preserved its historic character for a new generation.

On the grounds, the Columbus County Memorial Garden honors local men and women whose military service and sacrifice are part of our community's story. Walk through the garden, read the names, and spend a few quiet minutes remembering the lives and families behind them. You'll also find the Charters of Freedom, installed in Columbus County Memorial Park in May 2026. The permanent display includes replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, bringing together in one place three documents that helped shape our nation.

The courthouse grounds offer a quieter end to the afternoon and a chance to see another side of Columbus County, one rooted in history, service, freedom, and remembrance.
